Gourd Bird House: Make Your Own Bird House

Gourd bird house is the simplest type of bird houses. You can simply teach your children to make the gourd bird house with you. However, you have to accompany your children during the process of making it.

Materials

You will need certain materials and tools to make the gourd bird house. First, put the large dried gourd and the exterior spray paint and sealer. After that, you will need such tools, like a power drill, an eye screw, a 3/8 drills bit, and a scrubbing pad. Next, start to make your own gourd bird house.

Making the House

At first, you have to prepare the gourd. It will need to be dried and cleaned. Then you have to make sure that the gourd is large enough for birds to nest in. The hole that you drill into it must allow room for many types of birds that you want to attract. Try to avoid using moldy gourds, but if you get one in that condition, you can simply clean it. Don’t forget to make sure that the gourd is hard and dry enough before you begin to build your gourd bird house.

Next, you will need to drill the hole into the gourd. Once that is complete, you have to clean out the inside of the gourd. It is very important to wear a mask when drilling into gourds. It is because the mold and seed dust from the gourds can cause respiratory problems if you breathe in too much. Once you have drilled your large entry hole, you have to make sure to drill three small holes underneath the bird house in order to allow for water drainage.

The third step is to put the eye screw into the top of the bird house in order to make it ready to hang. Then, start to decorate your gourd bird house. It can be left unpainted, although it still needs to be sealed to protect it from the rain.

The last step is to paint and seal it. After that, you are ready to hang it and wait for the birds to come to your gourd bird house.
